2010 jeep wrangler review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The gold standard of off-road vehicles. introductionfew vehicles are better off road than a jeep wrangler. This is the one that started it all. It's much more comfortable and convenient, offering more cargo and rear-seat passenger space. Still, the traditional two-door wrangler has its charms, and we enjoy all of them.  the 2010 wrangler has only minor changes, including a couple of new colors and some minor feature enhancements. There's an improved sunrider soft-top that is easier to remove, sahara and rubicon models have new alloy wheels, fog lamps and tow hooks are now standard on all models, the base sport models now have cloth upholstery, and there are other detail refinements.  the wrangler is available in a very wide range of models and trim levels and with an extensive array of optional equipment and features. In all versions, the 3. 8-liter v6 engine develops 202 horsepower and 237 pound-feet of torque. The unlimited sport and unlimited sahara are available with rear-wheel drive (2wd) or 4wd. Options include air conditioning 895), a black appearance group 685), a chrome edition group 920), a 3. 73:1 axle ratio 50) instead of the standard ratio of 3. 21. 1, a limited-slip differential 295), the dual top group 1,625), sirius satellite radio ( $195), tubular side steps 395), infinity sound system 395), front seat-mounted side airbags 490), tinted windows 300), the power convenience group (power windows, power door locks, and remote keyless entry 585), an am/fm six-disc in-dash dvd/mp3 player 350), and trailer towing 320). Seat-mounted front side airbags for torso protection are optional. walkaroundthe jeep wrangler is one of the most widely recognizable vehicles in the world. The upright fold-down windshield is slightly curved for better aerodynamics and reduced wind noise.  along the sides, all wranglers have assist steps under the doors to make climbing in easier, and fender flares that are bolted on, so they can be easily taken off for repair or replacement.  the standard soft top is relatively easy to remove and install. The sunrider soft top slides back half way, like a huge sunroof over the front seats. The optional three-piece modular hardtop (freedom top) has two front panels that easily pop on and off like a t-top, and can be stored behind the rear seat. The third panel over the rear seat can be removed separately and stored in the garage. The freedom top yields a total of six open-air possibilities.  under the body, there's a boxed frame with seven crossmembers. Wide-spaced frame rails cradle the fuel tank between the wheels. Three skid plates protect the fuel tank, transfer case and automatic transmission oil pan. interiorwranglers have traditionally been known as cramped inside. The comfortable high-back front seats offer more shoulder and hip room than previous-generation models, and the removable rear seat provides more shoulder, hip and leg room for each of the two passengers. The headrests flip back, so they don't need to be removed, making it easy to switch between cargo and rear-seat-passenger modes. That huge difference is because, in the two-door model, the rear passengers sit directly over the axle and between the wheel wells; in the unlimited, the axle is located behind the passengers. The instruments, including the optional compass and temperature gauges, are easy to read, and the controls are simple. The solid square buttons look good and are easy to understand and operate. The materials are made of sturdy plastic that works well in the utilitarian wrangler.  the optional 368-watt infinity sound system comes with seven speakers, including a subwoofer. That's a lot of speakers for a jeep, but we think this is a good thing. It comes with sirius satellite radio, good for keeping up with the news when out in the boonies. The locking glove box is pretty big and there's a convenient grab handle above it. This is a jeep, after all, so the grab handle will be used on bouncy roads, or where there are no roads at all.  the modular freedom top for the unlimited features sections that easily lift off and can be stored behind the rear seat. We found storing the two roof panels eliminates most of the cargo space. Cargo space is not unlimited in the unlimited. But it's a relative thing. Compared to earlier versions, the current model feels like a luxury liner.  compared to the last-generation wrangler, the wheelbase is longer and the front and rear tracks are wider, the chassis has been stiffened and the suspension redesigned. All these things yield significant improvements in the ride and handling, but still, on city streets, the wrangler is pretty bouncy, and out on the freeway it can feel squiggly over pavement changes. Small crossover with big-suv virtues. introductionthe jeep compass is a car-based vehicle that's enjoyable to drive and comes with a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. First introduced as a 2007 model, the compass is built on a front-wheel-drive, car-based structure, a modified version of the platform that supports the mitsubishi lancer and jeep patriot.  one way to measure the value of the compass might be to compare it to the trusty jeep cherokee that was enormously popular for 18 years and finally ended its run in 2001. It's a solid, sophisticated, 16-valve engine. It features electronic variable valve timing that continually changes the torque curve, bringing more versatility to the 165 peak pound-feet of torque, and more capability to the 172 peak horsepower. The cvt comes with the auto stick manual shiftgate feature for 2008. The auto stick enables the driver to shift up and down over six preset gear ratios, making it feel like a six-speed gearbox without a clutch pedal.  also new for 2008, jeep has recalibrated the engine and transaxle for improved drivability and reduced noise. Chrome interior accents brighten the 2008 models, and air conditioning and a tire-pressure monitor are standard equipment.  the safety, ride and handling of the compass are all excellent, with a strong steel structure and well-planned subframe. Side-curtain airbags and electronic stability control with anti-rollover sensors are standard. Power windows and power door locks are optional, however. Some cannot.  inside, the compass is thoughtfully designed. The instruments and controls are well placed and easy to use, though the materials feel cut rate. There's good interior space all around, with rear seats that fold flat to make about 54 cubic feet of cargo space. Options for added versatility include reclining rear seats and a passenger front seat that also folds flat, creating either a table or eight-foot-long space for storage. lineupthe jeep compass comes as two models, sport and limited, each with front-wheel drive (2wd) or all-wheel drive (awd). A rallye group for sport 1,985) and limited 1,850) includes driving lamps, a rear stabilizer bar, rear spoiler, bright exhaust tip, and mopar body trim; for sport, it also adds p215/55r18 tires on aluminum wheels.  safety features that come standard on all models include dual front air bags; head-protecting curtain side air bags; tire-pressure monitor; antilock brakes with brake assist (which applies more brake force than the driver is applying if sensors determine it's needed in a panic stop); traction control; and electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. Torso-protecting side-impact air bags for front-seat occupants are optional 250) and we recommend them. walkaroundjeep sent its brand in a new direction in 2007, introducing two car-based suvs, the compass and patriot. Of the two, the compass has more of a crossover look, especially from the sculpted side, with smoothly angular flares over the wheels and more laid back lines. The rear door handles are vertical, mounted on the c-pillars to preserve the character line. (the patriot, on the other hand, is more upright, looking like a smaller version of the commander and a throwback to the old cherokee. Jeep's other compact suv, the liberty, is redesigned for 2008. It looks similar to the patriot, but is even more upright and masculine.)  the liftgate on the compass is sloped at nearly a 45-degree angle, while those of the patriot and liberty are vertical; and the third side window, into the cargo area, is a stylized triangle (leaving more sheetmetal and reducing visibility) while the others, again, are square.  that slope at the rear of the compass is matched by the steeply raked windshield, leading up to a roof that's slightly lower than that of the patriot and almost five inches lower than the liberty's. Black plastic roof rails continue from the top corners of the windshield all the way to the spoiler over the liftgate, channeling water over the roof.  the compass limited has aluminum-looking trim on the sides and bumpers. The less-costly sport looks classier in its cleaner monotone. The optional 18-inch chromed aluminum wheels on the limited will appeal to those who want their jeep suv to look more like a cadillac escalade. interiorthe jeep compass cabin is roomy and comfortable. The front bucket seats are very comfortable without being soft. The sport is available with jeep's yes essentials upholstery, a rugged fabric that's stain, odor and static resistant. The front seat jacks upward, which is nice because the long dash makes it hard to see the ground in front of the car, even though the hood is short. The interior isn't very exciting to look at (boring in beige but better in gray) and the feel is far from luxurious. But it is quite functional. The center stack is wide and intelligently designed: rectangular vents on top, a single-disc am/fm/cd stereo below it, and below that a slot that might hold a paperback book. Lower still are three climate control knobs and various buttons for options (including the available heated seats). The shift lever, manual or automatic, sprouts from the dash below these buttons. This practical high forward position was introduced by honda, but actually originated in rally racing cars, where ergonomics really matter.  moving rearward, between the front seats, there are two fixed cupholders, the emergency brake handle, and a flip-up center console containing a slot for a cell phone or mp3 player. The console top is an armrest, and can slide forward three inches to accommodate drivers of different sizes.  legroom is good, both front and rear: 39. 4 inches in the rear. The compass will be a fine vehicle for a family trip, with reclining rear seats, optional on sport and standard on limited. There are cupholders in the rear but no net pockets on th.

2008 jeep patriot review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Standard safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes, multi-stage front airbags, side airbag curtains, electronic stability control and electronic roll mitigation.  as it's programmed in the patriot, the optional continuously variable transaxle (replacing the automatic transmission) is too weird to be comfortable. The same cvt is used in the jeep compass, and it works well. The independent suspension is as good as the engine, delivering steadiness and comfort in every abusive situation we could find for it, during a long day of driving on every surface from patchy two-lanes, to hard-packed dirt roads, to sandy off-road trails, to shallow rivers, to deep gullies. For the off-road parts, we drove a jeep with the optional freedom ii off-road package that makes the patriot trail rated and raises the price by about $2000.  on twisty roads and maneuvering around-town, the patriot feels light and nimble. The turn-in is sharp. The body is well isolated from the wheels. This keeps the jeep under five mph and under control, going down steep hills, even icy ones. Air conditioning and cruise control do not come standard, and the windows, mirrors and door locks are manual.  air conditioning is optional 850). Power windows, mirrors and door locks with remote entry are part of a power equipment group 995). Another package has cruise control. A more complete package includes all those things plus tinted windows, map and dome lights, driver seat height adjustment, fold-flat front passenger seat, reclining rear seats, 115-volt outlet, foglamps and roofrail crossbars.  the limited 2wd 19,985) and 4wd 21,785) adds most if not all of the options in the groups, as well as 17-inch aluminum wheels, foglamps, passenger grab handles, chrome roofrails and other trim, and leather-trimmed seats.  a continuously variable transaxle is available for the 2. 4-liter engine as well as a 2. 0-liter engine.  the off-road package is called freedom drive ii, and uses the cvt with lower ratios; it adds skid plates, tow hooks, foglamps, all-terrain tires and a full-size spare tire. The freedom ii package is available for sport 4wd 19,175) and limited 4wd 23,130).  options include a trailer tow prep group with engine oil cooler and wiring harness 130); a 458-watt boston acoustic premium sound system with nine speakers and steering wheel controls 495); six-disc cd 320); 6cd with navigation 1395); yes essentials seating material 250); heated seats 250); sunroof 800); and 17-inch all-terrain tires 140).  safety features include frontal airbags, curtain airbags; electronic stability control, abs, electronic brake-force distribution. walkaroundthe patriot is unmistakably a jeep. It looks like a jeep all the way: more so than the stylish cherokee or big boxy commander. The windshield and backlight are relatively vertical, and the bumpers are defined and not molded into the fascia. It's almost exactly the same size as the new jeep compass but it looks more rugged, lacking the rounded edges of the gentrified compass. It looks more like a liberty, or maybe like a baby commander. It's classic, the way it should be. interiorthe seating position is high in the patriot, two inches higher than in the caliber; with the upright windshield, the forward visibility inspires confidence. Leather in the limited is great, but seems to overdress the patriot. The climate and sound system controls are easy to understand and operate. The vinyl panel, with a center stack trimmed in brushed aluminum-look plastic, doesn't try to be stylish; the lines are pretty square, but who cares?  the space between the seats includes a nook for change, two fixed cupholders, and the parking brake lever. A short armrest flips up to open the main console compartment, where there's a pocket for a cellphone or ipod. It slides forward three inches for shorter drivers.  the door pockets are on the small side, but can hold six cd cases; much of the space there is taken up by the six- by nine-inch speakers. The door handles are easy to use. That's the same as the compass and a couple inches more than the liberty, longest of the three.  the standard rear seat is a 60/40 split that easily folds flat, by flipping up the seat and flopping down the seatback. Reclining rear seats are optional, as is a flat-folding front seat. With everything folded flat, there's a spacious 62. 7 cubic feet of cargo capacity, and room for an eight-foot-long kayak, ladder or whatever.  with just the rear seats folded, there's still 54. 2 cubic feet; and with all the seats in use there's 23. 0 feet in the back, good for any compact suv. The rear cargo area is something called ultra floor, a washable and removable vinyl. No worries with dogs and lawn mowers. driving impressionthe 2. 4-liter engine works well in the jeep patriot. Chrysler uses this 2. 4-liter world engine in a lot of vehicles. Depending on things like electronic programming and the transmission that's used, it feels different each time. In the jeep patriot, it feels great. Jeep has found the power, 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. That's good because left to its own programming, the cvt makes the patriot feel like it's powered by a big rubber band. It will go from 0 to 90 mph without shifting. In any case, that's the way cvts work.  and this is only under full throttle. The patriot can also lope along at 80 mph and a mellow 2600 rpm. The patriot forums on this should be interesting. At speeds below about 50 mph, when the cvt kicks down for better acceleration, it does so slowly and with a small thump. And often, in the mountains.  the five-speed manual gearbox was a relief, a joy to use, even with its long throw. The lever comes out of the center stack as it should, above the driver's right knee, an improvement over being on the floor near the right thigh. The five-speed made the patriot feel like a jeep. It brought out the potential of the world engine. It didn't try to mess with the power. The acceleration felt much stronger.  the suspensi.
