2008 jeep compass review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Small crossover with big-suv virtues. introductionthe jeep compass is a car-based vehicle that's enjoyable to drive and comes with a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. First introduced as a 2007 model, the compass is built on a front-wheel-drive, car-based structure, a modified version of the platform that supports the mitsubishi lancer and jeep patriot.  one way to measure the value of the compass might be to compare it to the trusty jeep cherokee that was enormously popular for 18 years and finally ended its run in 2001. It's a solid, sophisticated, 16-valve engine. It features electronic variable valve timing that continually changes the torque curve, bringing more versatility to the 165 peak pound-feet of torque, and more capability to the 172 peak horsepower. The cvt comes with the auto stick manual shiftgate feature for 2008. The auto stick enables the driver to shift up and down over six preset gear ratios, making it feel like a six-speed gearbox without a clutch pedal.  also new for 2008, jeep has recalibrated the engine and transaxle for improved drivability and reduced noise. Chrome interior accents brighten the 2008 models, and air conditioning and a tire-pressure monitor are standard equipment.  the safety, ride and handling of the compass are all excellent, with a strong steel structure and well-planned subframe. Side-curtain airbags and electronic stability control with anti-rollover sensors are standard. Power windows and power door locks are optional, however. Some cannot.  inside, the compass is thoughtfully designed. The instruments and controls are well placed and easy to use, though the materials feel cut rate. There's good interior space all around, with rear seats that fold flat to make about 54 cubic feet of cargo space. Options for added versatility include reclining rear seats and a passenger front seat that also folds flat, creating either a table or eight-foot-long space for storage. lineupthe jeep compass comes as two models, sport and limited, each with front-wheel drive (2wd) or all-wheel drive (awd). It comes standard with a five speed manual transmission or a cvt automatic 1100) with auto stick manual shiftgate. It makes 158 hp and 141 pound-feet of torque and only comes with the cvt.  the 2wd sport 16,475) and awd sport 18,225) come standard cloth upholstery; air conditioning; outside-temperature indicator; am/fm/cd stereo with auxiliary audio jack; vinyl load floor; center console sliding armrest with cell phone or mp3 pocket; 60/40 split rear seat; tilt steering column; fog lamps; roof rails; and p215/60r17 tires on aluminum wheels. The front and rear fascia and side moldings have shiny aluminum accents.  options for the limited include the sport options, plus its own security and cargo convenience group 495) with daytime running lights, alarm, cargo cover, and jeep's uconnect wireless cell phone link; chrome-plated 18-inch aluminum wheels 825); the boston acoustics sound system 495); and a dvd-based navigation system with six-disc cd changer 1,395). A rallye group for sport 1,985) and limited 1,850) includes driving lamps, a rear stabilizer bar, rear spoiler, bright exhaust tip, and mopar body trim; for sport, it also adds p215/55r18 tires on aluminum wheels.  safety features that come standard on all models include dual front air bags; head-protecting curtain side air bags; tire-pressure monitor; antilock brakes with brake assist (which applies more brake force than the driver is applying if sensors determine it's needed in a panic stop); traction control; and electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. Torso-protecting side-impact air bags for front-seat occupants are optional 250) and we recommend them. walkaroundjeep sent its brand in a new direction in 2007, introducing two car-based suvs, the compass and patriot. Of the two, the compass has more of a crossover look, especially from the sculpted side, with smoothly angular flares over the wheels and more laid back lines. The rear door handles are vertical, mounted on the c-pillars to preserve the character line. (the patriot, on the other hand, is more upright, looking like a smaller version of the commander and a throwback to the old cherokee. Jeep's other compact suv, the liberty, is redesigned for 2008. It looks similar to the patriot, but is even more upright and masculine.)  the liftgate on the compass is sloped at nearly a 45-degree angle, while those of the patriot and liberty are vertical; and the third side window, into the cargo area, is a stylized triangle (leaving more sheetmetal and reducing visibility) while the others, again, are square.  that slope at the rear of the compass is matched by the steeply raked windshield, leading up to a roof that's slightly lower than that of the patriot and almost five inches lower than the liberty's. Black plastic roof rails continue from the top corners of the windshield all the way to the spoiler over the liftgate, channeling water over the roof.  the compass limited has aluminum-looking trim on the sides and bumpers. The less-costly sport looks classier in its cleaner monotone. The optional 18-inch chromed aluminum wheels on the limited will appeal to those who want their jeep suv to look more like a cadillac escalade. interiorthe jeep compass cabin is roomy and comfortable. The front bucket seats are very comfortable without being soft. The sport is available with jeep's yes essentials upholstery, a rugged fabric that's stain, odor and static resistant. The front seat jacks upward, which is nice because the long dash makes it hard to see the ground in front of the car, even though the hood is short. The interior isn't very exciting to look at (boring in beige but better in gray) and the feel is far from luxurious. But it is quite functional. The center stack is wide and intelligently designed: rectangular vents on top, a single-disc am/fm/cd stereo below it, and below that a slot that might hold a paperback book. Lower still are three climate control knobs and various buttons for options (including the available heated seats). The shift lever, manual or automatic, sprouts from the dash below these buttons. This practical high forward position was introduced by honda, but actually originated in rally racing cars, where ergonomics really matter.  moving rearward, between the front seats, there are two fixed cupholders, the emergency brake handle, and a flip-up center console containing a slot for a cell phone or mp3 player. The console top is an armrest, and can slide forward three inches to accommodate drivers of different sizes.  legroom is good, both front and rear: 39. 4 inches in the rear. The compass will be a fine vehicle for a family trip, with reclining rear seats, optional on sport and standard on limited. There are cupholders in the rear but no net pockets on th.

2002 chrysler sebring review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Alfresco motoring that's practical and affordable. introductionchrysler's sebring convertible combines a roomy interior, attractive pricing with a sleek design and top-down motoring. Maybe that's why it's america's best-selling convertible.  who says practicality has to be boring? Boring goes out the window with the touch of a button, as the sebring's top drops behind the rear seat. This car looks good even with the top up. Completely redesigned a year ago, chrysler's convertible sports smooth lines similar to the sebring coupe and sedan. Beneath its sleek interior is a stiff structure with a suspension designed to provide sporty handling and a smooth ride. Optional is a sophisticated anti-lock brake system chrysler calls abs plus 565) designed to better balance braking forces at each wheel; this helps improve stability when braking and turning at the same time by counteracting yawing or swerving. Abs plus comes with electronic brake distribution (ebd), which distributes braking forces front to rear for better stopping performance. walkaroundchrysler has been a leader in american design in recent years and the sebring convertible is an example of that. Its fluid lines stretch smoothly over a long and broad form. The overall shape is dominated by a prominent hood and cantilevered windshield that rakes rearward at an extreme angle. The design is similar to that of the sebring sedan and coupe, but there are key differences that go beyond the soft top.  the front of the convertible is set off with an exaggerated oval air intake port inset with a dark egg-crate grille ringed in chrome. Narrow headlamps wrap around front corners above round fog lights flanking the grille.  side panels with rolled shoulders flare in rings around wheelwells to draw attention to large wheels that include multi-spoke designs in cast aluminum for the lxi, and chrome alloy for the limited. The sedan and convertible use similar chassis and suspension elements, and share the same v6 engine and automatic transmissions. Convertible and sedan roll out of the same chrysler assembly plant in sterling heights, michigan. (see separate reviews of the sedan and coupe at newcartestdrive. Com.). interiorsebring's passenger compartment is an expansive space filled with form-fitting seats and stylish design elements. Generous room for riders stems from cab-forward architecture that extends the windshield forward, abbreviates space for the engine, and increases the length and width of the cabin.  high-back bucket seats are standard in cloth fabric for sebring lx. Sebring lxi gets leather trim, while the limited comes with softer premium leather trim. Seats feel firm and comfortable; the driver's seat gets six-way power adjustments.  a dashboard collection of round analog instruments, tucked beneath an arched cowl and ringed with chrome bezels, employs easy-to-read white-on-black graphics for lx and lxi. Bold black-on-white graphics and electroluminescent lighting add zest to the instruments in the limited.  although the dashboard is essentially linear, there's a wrap-around feel to the cockpit. A center console houses the transmission shift lever and a padded armrest. Above the console, a central stack of controls for the audio and climate systems shows large rotary dials in a simple scheme.  at the top of the dash, an available display provides compass headings, outside temperature readings, trip mileage, fuel economy and estimated distance to an empty tank -- useful information on trips or when out and about.  unlike some convertibles, the sebring provides enough room in the backseat for two adults to sit comfortably; and it's fitted with three-point seatbelts. Twin cup holders extend from the rear of the floor console. Front seatbacks tip and slide forward quickly for easy backseat entry, and the front seatbelts do not impede entry because anchors are integrated in top corners of the seatbacks.  trunk space is also good for a convertible; the trunk will accommodate two golf bags stacked together.  the power-operated pop-top drops in seconds with one-button ease to let the sun shine in or closes equally fast to block a sudden shower. It's a snap to operate: simply unlock two latches located above windshield visors, then touch a single button on the dashboard and the lid folds quickly into a well behind the rear seat. Continue to depress the button and side windows will also drop out of sight. Reverse the process to seal the top shut. With that in mind, the structure was designed to be highly rigid, and the sebring convertible feels as tight as a coupe. Completely re-engineered for 2001, this latest-generation sebring represents a huge improvement over the previous-generation convertible.  the sebring maintains an impressively flat stance in corners, even when pressed hard. The stiff chassis, fortified by lateral braces to compensate for the convertible's lack of a unifying roof structure, plays a key role in achieving sebring's taut ride traits. The suspension is fully independent, with a short- and long-arm arrangement up front and a multi-link design in the rear. Front and rear stabilizer bars reduce lean in corners. Sebring's steering mechanism, with power assistance linked to a crisp rack-and-pinion device, reveals a nice neutral feel.  all three trim choices use the same suspension components, but wheels and tires differ. The lx has 15-inch wheels, but the wheels for lxi and limited bump up an inch larger and are shod with michelin all-season tires. The larger tires offer better grip and turn in more crisply, improving the sebring's agility.  step on the pedal to leap around traffic and the sebring pounces like a cat catching prey. The v6 engine produces 200 horsepower spread over a broad torque band. The 2. 7-liters v6 uses an aluminum block fitted with double overhead cams and multi-valve technology. It can charge off the line at a stoplight. It also has enough guts at speed to surge ahead of other cars in a quick lane change. The limited models comes with the autostick transmission, which allows the driver to shift into a semi-manual mode. But for everyday use in urban traffic the standard automatic employed on lx and lxi editions work just fine. summarythe chrysler sebring is the convertible for people who don't want to be cramped in a sports car. It's stylish and fun and it won't break the bank. But this is no loosy-goosy boulevard cruiser; it acts more like a sports coupe. model lineuplx 23,075); lxi 26,160); limited 28,795). assembled insterling heights, michigan. options as testedabs plus 565). model testedsebring lxi 26,160). Stylish, fun to drive, and affordable. introductionchrysler's sebring coupe combines style, practicality, and sporty driving dynamics at an affordable price.  the sebring is a stylish sports coupe, yet there's enough genuine legroom in the back seats for two adults. This is a lot of sports coupe for $20,000, and a v6 engine is available for increased acceleration performance. lineupsebring coupe is available as two models: lx and lxi.  sebring lx 20,020) is powered by a 2. 4-lit. 2005 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New models expand superb new lineup. introductionford f-150 has been the best-selling full-size pickup for 27 consecutive years, and it's the most important, most profitable vehicle ford makes. Last year ford threw away the old formula and created a new f-150 from the ground up. At the top is a new king ranch model lavishly outfitted in castano leather. At the bottom is a new v6 model available with an automatic or manual transmission. An inexpensive work truck model has been added as well. In between is the industry's widest variety of body configurations: three cab styles, three bed lengths, two bed styles, and a choice of v8 engines. The f-150 comes equipped with dual frontal airbags designed to deploy according to the severity of the crash and who or what is occupying the seat. The xl, stx, xlt, fx4, lariat, and king ranch each boast their own interior style and features. Engines, suspensions and cab configurations are designed to meet specific needs. Xl is readily identifiable by its black grille and fascia and 17-inch steel wheels, though it comes with chrome bumpers. Xl is available in regular cab or supercab (extended cab) styles. An f-150 xl 4. 2-liter v8 regular cab 2wd automatic short wheelbase retails for $21,455, but a v6 manual will lower that price to $19,610; a long-wheelbase 4x4 v8 automatic supercab is priced at $29,690. (manufacturer's suggested retail prices are subject to change and do not include the destination charge of $795.)  stx is sportier than the xl, with a body-colored grille-surround for the black bar grille, and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Stx comes in styleside (flat) and flareside (fendered) body styles, in regular cab or supercab, with either a 6. 5-foot or a 5. 5-foot cargo box. An audiophile sound system with subwoofer and six-disc cd changer is optional. Stx starts at $22,285.  xlt is the most popular model, nicer and better-equipped than xl though not as luxurious as lariat. It comes with a honeycomb grille that sets it apart from the other models. Xlt comes in regular cab, supercab or supercrew, with a choice of 5. 5-, 6. 5-, or 8-foot bed lengths, and styleside or flareside body styles. A premium cloth interior is standard on the bench seats or optional captain's chairs. The xlt instrument panel gets more flash than either the xl or stx dash. Supercab, as well as supercrew versions, get power windows for the rear doors. The xlt also features an overhead rail console system that the owner can tailor to his or her needs. Fog lamps come standard on 4x4 xlts. An xlt supercrew 4x4 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $35,275.  fx4 is a special off-road model. The interior features chrome trim and markings, and a floor shifter. Fx4 is available in regular cab, supercab, and supercrew body styles, with either 5. 5-foot styleside or 6. 5-foot flareside or styleside bed designs (no 8-foot bed). The standard engine is the 5. 4-liter v8. The fx4 has its own instrument package as do the rest of the models, with carbon mesh accents on the metallic dashboard. Captain's chairs in cloth or leather are optional, and 18-inch cast aluminum wheels are standard. An f-150 fx4 supercrew retails for $34,605.  lariat is the luxury model. It has its own grille design and comes standard with 18-inch wheels. Lariat features black-on-cream instruments, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power-adjustable floor pedals, an in-dash message center, and climate control. Heated power leather captain's chairs are optional. Lariat 2wd models are available in all three body styles, but 4x4 versions are only available with styleside fenders. An f-150 lariat supercrew 4x4 starts at $35,875.  king ranch features rich castano leather designed to capture the spirit of the historic texas cattle ranch. It comes as a supercrew distinguished by with a color-coordinated grille, arizona beige running boards, and other special trim. Inside are power-adjustable and heated captain's chairs in front, a 60/40 split bench seat in back, and unique interior tri. walkaroundredesigned for 2004, the ford f-150 looks much more manly than the previous-generation models. Its tall shoulders, bold front end and crisp lines give it a more utilitarian look that leaves no doubt that this is a serious truck. It's at least as stylish as the much-heralded dodge ram, but is totally different. In fact, the f-150 has a unique look, no small feat when designing within the hard parameters imposed by a pickup. In short, we think the new f-150 is a great-looking truck.  the f-150 has picked up styling cues from the handsome super duty pickups, including the sharp cut in the forward part of the door, allowing a clear view of the massive outside mirrors. A high beltline gives the truck visual strength and makes occupants feel more secure. The roofline is somewhat reminiscent of chopped-top custom street trucks.  the whole nose is shaped more squarely than the previous generation, which featured more feminine, more car-like curves. The grilles are larger and bolder. The front fascia wraps around to the fenders for a precise, sophisticated appearance. The bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is chiseled, though it looks more slab-sided at the same time, a theme that carries through the tailgate, giving the f-150 an upscale, utilitarian look that's very appealing.  the different trim levels are quite distinctive. Just one example: xlt and lariat have a honeycomb grille (black on xlt, brushed-nickel on lariat), while xl, stx, fx4, and king ranch use a bar-style grille.  practical considerations are a big part of the design, and some of this can be easily seen. Every bed, no matter which length or style, is two inches taller than previous-generation's beds to give more margin when hauling larger cargoes. The supercab (extended cab) doors are larger than the vestigial doors on the standard cab. At the other end of the spectrum is the king ranch, which evokes images of montana and cowboys. Lariat comes with every known amenity.  we found the xlt's front bench seats attractive, but they were flat and lacked support. The front bench is split three ways. They also looked great, trimmed in black leather with light gray stitching. Adjusting the power seats may be a little awkward for drivers with big arms because the clearance between the door armrest and the seat is a little tight; rake adjustment on the power driver's seat is manual, and raking it forward can be a bit awkward. The center console between the captain's chairs is deep and holds a lot of stuff and features a pair of big, solid cup holders. The floor shifter for the automatic works very well.  the radio and hvac controls are plain but straightforward and easy to operate. Giant mirrors afford an excellent view rearward.
